Grand Rapids Public Library honors Dia de los Muertos

By: Brittney Schering

Grand Rapids Public Library will explore the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Oct. 28-30. Local residents have built more than 20 alters honoring the dead, which will be displayed.

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that honors family and friends who have passed on. Loved ones come together to build alters that celebrate the life and memory of the dead. The day is a time of celebration and joy, filled with talk and memories of those who have died.

On Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m., Magical Rain Theatreworks will present “Day of the Dead Comes Alive.” Participants will learn about Dia de los Muertos as it is celebrated in both Mexico and north of the border and the ancient tradition of honoring on each other in both life and death.

The interactive presentation mixes theatre, myths, and stories with guided discussions and creative arts activities. On Saturday, youngsters are invited to decorate sugar skulls. An additional take-home craft activity will be provided for children, too.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (616) 988-5400 or visit www.grpl.org.
