Harry Potter advance tickets on sale now

By: Brittney Schering

In the past 10 days, more than 3,300 midnight showing tickets were sold for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One. The advance tickets are now available at all Celebration! Cinema locations. They can be purchased online or at a theatre box office.

Midnight shows in the IMAX theatre at Celebration! Grand Rapids North are already sold out, but tickets can still be bought for opening day and week showings.

The movie was originally slated for a 3-D release, but Warner Brothers opted not to do 3-D at the last minute. However, it will still be shown in both digital and IMAX formats.

Shows are selling out quickly, and more auditoriums are being added to the list as the theatres fill up. For the last Twilight movie, more than 18,000 tickets were sold for the midnight shows alone. Celebration! Cinema is hoping to break the record with Harry Potter.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. Without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. Meanwhile, Dark Forces appear in their midst, threatening to tear them apart.

All show times, ticket prices, and other needed information can be viewed online at http://celebrationcinema.com.

Red Hydrant Press hosts Day of the Dead Mini Print Exhibition

By: Brittney Schering

In a non-traditional celebration of the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, Red Hydrant Press hosts Dead End, an exhibit of small prints created by Michigan and national artists around the theme of oil from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 and from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 30.

Jose Guadalupe Posada, the most widely recognized Day of the Dead artist, worked as an illustrator and printmaker in Mexico City at the turn of the 20th century. His prints popularized the holiday's symbolic Calaveras, or decorated skulls.

Posada's revolutionary ideals remain at the core of today's Day of the Dead artistic celebrations.
The challenge is to connect Dia de Los Muertos imagery to our culture's dependence to oil consumption, production, trade, and environmental impact.

To increase the challenge, artists are asked to express this in a print that is no larger than five-by-seven inches. Red Hydrant's own Alynn Guerra, along with artist and Grand Valley State University professor, Bret Colley, will curate the mini exhibit.

Guerra and Red Hydrant sculptor, Carlos Aceves, will also construct a traditional Day of the Dead altar where gifts of food, drink, and flowers honor loved ones who have passed away. From 4 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, children can decorate paper Calaveras. Saturday evening, Villalobos will perform live music.

The prints will remain on display through Nov. 21. For more information, head over to www.redhydrantpress.com

Public Library presents “Ghosts and Legends of Michigan’s West Coast” event

By: Brittney Schering

Grand Rapids Public Library invites everyone to come and listen to ghost story researcher and enthusiast, Amberrose Hammond, as she explores the ghosts and haunted places of West Michigan. “Ghosts and Legends of Michigan’s West Coast” will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Main Library.

West Michigan is home to some of the state’s most picturesque places and most chilling tales. Hammond exposes the mysterious and spirit-ridden world of many beloved destinations in Michigan as she skillfully weaves narratives of a world unseen by most.

From the lonely, hard-working spirit of the old Grand Theatre and the roaming band of melon-headed children prowling the Saugatuck State Park to the ghostly blue lights of the Lake Forest Cemetery staircase waiting to reveal one’s place in the afterlife, these tales are sure to give pause to anyone daring enough to experience these hauntingly beautiful spots.

Hammond, along with Tom Maat of Michigan’s Otherside, will discuss their favorite haunts, legends, and investigations into the paranormal they have conducted around Michigan. After their presentation, participants will be asked to share their own personal paranormal experiences.

Hammond has been actively researching ghost stories, folklore, and legends in Michigan since 2000. She earned a B.A. in English from Grand Valley State University in 2005. Her pursuits into paranormal studies led her to design and develop Michigan’s Otherside, a website featuring the strange and mysterious sides of the state.

“Ghosts and Legends of Michigan’s West Coast” will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 in the Ryerson Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (616) 988-5400 or visit our website at www.grpl.org.

Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival presents Grand Rapids filmmaker

By: Brittney Schering

Scott Baisden, a Michigan filmmaker who operates out of Grand Rapids, is pleased to announce the world premiere of his short film, Devil at the Door. It was chosen to play at the Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 24 at noon.

Devil at the Door centers around Howard “Duke” Ellington, a lonely man with a terrible secret. He believes he has captured Satan himself and has imprisoned him in an upstairs room until he decides what to do next.

Baisden’s short film is part of a larger project, Abstract Alley, which is homage to The Twilight Zone-era of television storytelling. Themes and tropes include alien invasion, divine intervention, xenophobia, altered perceptions, and monsters.

Debate in Lansing is focused on the Michigan film tax incentive. In Grand Rapids, filmmakers such as Baisden have always made do without financial breaks, making art out of their own pockets. Devil at the Door was shot for less than 100 dollars and edited on a laptop without any post-production facilities. It was real guerilla, shoot-from-the-hip filmmaking.

Splendid Threads, Secret Messages: The Language of Japanese Kimonos

By: Brittney Schering

The Muskegon Museum of Art has opened a new exhibition, Splendid Threads, Secret Messages: The Language of Japanese Kimonos. The exhibition will run through Jan. 23, 2011. It provides an introduction to the world of Japanese kimonos. Symbolic messages are hidden in their exquisite decorations and traditions from the past still dictate how they are worn today.

While Westerners readily recognize this garment and its country of origin, our knowledge generally stops there. Closer examination can provoke many questions, such as: Do all those birds, flowers, and fans really mean something? Why are some sleeves so very long?

Hidden in the design details are messages of love, honor, longevity, faithfulness, and more. Kimonos, while similar in style, can reveal social status, age, the season of the year, and other aspects of daily life through pattern, color, and fabric.

The selection of more than a dozen garments covers a range of traditional clothing from children's wear to bridal robes and men's attire to resort apparel. Today kimonos are worn primarily for festivals and celebrations, but they remain icons of Japanese culture.

Splendid Threads was organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art with the assistance of guest curator Patricia Wade. The exhibition is sponsored by the Van Kampen Foundation and Blue Lake Public Radio. Please head over to www.muskegonartmuseum.org for more information and related programs in the area.

Experience the paranormal investigation tour on a Friday from now until Sept. 30, 2011. Admission is $26 online or $32 at the door. The tours meet at Rosa Parks Circle at 8 p.m. and revisit some of the oldest haunts whose spirits still roam the streets of Grand Rapids.

Eyewitness accounts of physical phenomena and disturbances have been reported and observed at several locations. Guests should consider this before participating in a tour. Each person brave enough to come along is at will and responsible for his/her own safety and well-being.

The tours are virtually ghost-hunting. They are not for the faint of heart. Facts and circumstances regarding ongoing paranormal activity are too graphic and inappropriate for young children. For more information, check out www.cityscapeadventures.com.

Dan Henderson’s art to be displayed during October

By: Brittney Schering

The Washington Square Art Gallery is pleased to announce that it will feature Dan Henderson’s photography during the month of October.

Dan Henderson’s flirtation with photography began as a child using a Kodak Instamatic, as he became the “official” photographer of family vacations. Later he experienced the thrill and alchemy of the high school’s dark room as he watched his first print appear from the developer, and experimented in that “dark chamber” to produce unusual images.

Henderson works in black and white film today. He develops all of his own art in a dark room. He uses the classic photographic process to better express his vision.

The Gallery is located at 453 Washington Ave. in Holland. The hours are Wednesday-Thursday, 12-7 p.m. and Friday-Saturday, 12-9 p.m. For more information, please visit http://www.washingtonsquareartgallery.com/ or call (616) 396-0230.

Flyleaf and Story of the Year perform at Orbit Room this weekend

By Toni Swider

Story of the Year opened for Flyleaf and the band members impressed the crowd with their acrobatics and charisma. They made the crowd feel like a part of the show. They have come into their own over the years and don’t seem to be slowing down. SOTY can still bring the party and the fans are ready to rage.

Although there was a lot of people at the Orbit Room to see Story of the Year more people came out of the woodwork when Flyleaf took the stage. When the banner dropped the crowd went wild, chanting “Flyleaf.”

Entering after an intriguing light show, Flyleaf wasted no time getting the crowd enthralled in its lyrics. Hands to the sky and eyes closed, fans were taking every word Lacey Mosley would sing straight to their hearts. Her voice is so unique and beautiful. It can be soothing one second and tear the walls down the next with a scream that sends shivers down your spine. Never once did a voice crack or loss the beat.

Mosley knows how to perform and encapsulate the entire crowd while doing it. Flyleaf didn’t disappoint and never lost their energy. The songs touched everyone’s souls; they were heartfelt and performed to perfection. It was another great performance and an exciting night at the Orbit Room.

Griffin explores 'Events of October' murder-suicide

By: Brittney Schering

The 1999 murder-suicide of Maggie Wardle and Neenef Odah on Kalamazoo College's campus will be thoroughly explored by author Gail Griffin. "The Events of October: Murder-Suicide on a Small Campus" will be held in the Ryerson Auditorium of the Grand Rapids Public Library on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

In her new book, The Events of October, author and Kalamazoo College professor, Gail Griffin, attempts to answer the lingering question, "How could this happen to two seemingly normal students on such a close-knit campus?"

Griffin will discuss the relationship between Maggie and Neenef-- a bright, athletic, local girl and the quiet Iraqi-American computer student. She will examine the tension that built between them, leading to the breakup. She will also use the story to explore larger issues of intimate partner violence, gun accessibility, depression, and suicide.

On a Sunday night during Homecoming weekend, Neenef Odah lured his ex-girlfriend Maggie Wardle to his dorm room at Kalamazoo College and killed her at close range with a shot gun before he killed himself. In the wake of this tragedy, the small, idyllic liberal arts college's community struggled to characterize the incident. It was titled, "the events of October," in a campus memo.

Griffin's sources include college documents, official police reports, Neenef's suicide note, and an instant message record. For more information, call (616) 988-5400 or visit www.grpl.org.

Cottage burger is named 'best in Michigan' by USA Today

By: Brittney Schering

The Cottage Bar and Restaurant, home of the Cottage burger, is the oldest operating bar and restaurant in Downtown Grand Rapids. It is known for the casual charm and down-to-earth atmosphere and famous for having the city's best burgers.

The Cottage burger was recommended by Jaye Beeler, a food writer with Arbutuspress.com. Hours that you can come in and try one for yourself are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. - 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. - 2 a.m.
